How do you explain the world of wine’s longstanding fascination with comparing California to Bordeaux? Arguably, the best bottlings of the two regions represent some of the most famous and reputable wines in the world. Several high-profile tastings throughout the years—such as the Judgment of Paris in 1976, and a repeat tasting 30 years later in London—have considerably upped the profile of California’s finest, particularly in the context of its would-be rivalry with its more established French counterpart. So, for our seminar this next Saturday we decided to seek out our most Bordelaise of our California selection, such as well-structured Cabernet blends and smooth, richly styled Sauvignon Blancs, and pit them against some of our favorite Bordeaux bottlings. We’ll examine the similarities and differences between the two region’s styles, and test the boundary between New World and Old World winemaking. We’ll even run through the wines blind, to see once and for all exactly what it takes to discriminate the differences between these two oft-compared winemaking regions.
