Burgundy occupies a unique position in the wine world. In fact, one could argue that position is the apex of the wine world. This tiny province of eastern France possesses an impossibly complex system of appellations, impenetrable to only the most obsessive wine geeks. Yet recent years have seen the region’s popularity soar, and now it is universally regarded as the purest expression of terroir in the winemaking world. And even if you don’t buy into the hype, it’s impossible to argue with the fact that nobody makes wine like the vigernons of Burgundy.
But Burgundy’s no longer a wine lover’s cult secret—the region’s bottlings can be amongst the most expensive in the world. Value in Burgundy has become a precious rarity. For our seminar on Saturday we will explore the lesser known subappellations and smaller-scale producers who make gorgeous styles of wine without the exorbitant price tag. In addition, after a mercifully successful past vintage, there is actually wine! Not to sound flippant, but scarcity was par for the course regarding Burgundy’s output for many years, thanks to disastrous combinations of hail, frost and mildew wiping out the provenance of many a hard-working vine grower. Join us for a tasting that will examine the quality and style of the past few vintages through the lens of some of our favorite value-driven Burgundian producers.
