Extending 600 miles across roughly a quarter of France, the Loire Valley ranks third in viticultural output behind Bordeaux and the Rhône. The enormous length of its territory makes categorizing its wine no easy task. In general, both the red and whites of the Loire are medium bodied, graceful and elegant creations with much more local and national appeal than international renown. In general, the Loire Valley comprises a diverse family of winegrowing regions subject to a variety of winemaking influences, what with Chablis only 50 miles distant from Sancerre, and Muscadet in close proximity to Brittany. Between the two are 200 miles of varied countryside of castles and estates, once the summer homes of a long-gone aristocracy. Truly, the Loire Valley wouldn’t look out of place in a fairy tale, in addition to boasting an incredibly diverse array of available local wines. Join us on Saturday for a further exploration of this fascinating appellation.
