If you ask any wine connoisseur where their favorite Italian wine comes from, you’ll probably hear about the likes of Barolo from Piedmont or Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany. While the quality of these wines cannot be denied, the most fascinating up and coming wine region in Italy right now is a lot further south. The island of Sicily has been quietly reinventing itself into a fine wine-producing powerhouse. Italy’s largest island has a long history of quality wine production.

And thanks to a fierce loyalty to their culture and traditions, Sicilian producers never truly abandoned their winemaking roots, and today the region’s output is renowned for its great drinkability, be it the outstanding biancos and Frappatos, or the regional wines of Etna and Lipari. Even the dessert wines of of the region are reaching new heights of quality.
