“Critter Label” wines have become much maligned in the past decade or so, coming to be associated with mass produced, poor quality wine from Australia. Though there are many wines for which the association is true, just because a wine has an animal on the label doesn’t mean it’s plonk. In fact, many of the world’s iconic wines are associated with “critters”: La Spinetta’s rhinoceros, Domaine Arlaud’s horse, Chianti’s rooster, the German eagle, etc. Plus, animal labels can be quite cute and eye catching. This week we will taste some of our favorite “Critter Label” wines to prove that great wine can be found beneath these fun labels.
