Our Family Meal themes typically center around a source of great inspiration—be it a regional cuisine, a country or even a holiday. But on January 24, we are holding a tribute to a work of art that is near and dear to restaurants all over America striving to practice the gospel of the true gourmand. One of the most striking foodie movies of all time, the small-budget 1996 dramedy Big Night is an ode to all things food and family related.
It’s nearly impossible to find a person who appreciates all things relative to great culinary artistry and yet hasn’t fallen in love with this movie (Obviously, if you do meet that person, he or she is clearly a philistine and you shouldn’t talk to them.) Roger Ebert declared that it treated “food not as a subject but as a language—the language by which one can speak to gods, can create, can seduce, can aspire to perfection.” We share a similar reverence for the profound pleasures of simple food, and for the impossibly lyrical charm of this unique film, and in that vein we hope to share our inspiration with you on a very special big night.
