We all love to discourage the notion of New Mexican wine. It’s either too mass produced, we say, or it’s just for tourists, or there’s no sense of personality or “terroir” or whatever indefinable sense of something that truly distinguishes “real” wine from wannabe plonk. But what if there was a wine in New Mexico that not only tasted good but tasted well crafted, honest and real?
Milagro Vineyards creates estate wines in Northern New Mexico from vineyards located in and around the picturesque Village of Corrales. Convinced that wine is made mostly in the vineyard, they meticulously and now organically raise all the grapes used to make their wines. We are welcoming Rick to Arroyo Vino, and we’ll taste some of his wines in a head to head comparison. The team at Arroyo Vino will pair our favorites from around the world to show that NM can hold its own. The wines will be presented blind and we will talk about the grape, the growing environment and characteristics to look for, but you’ll have to decide which wine is New Mexico true and which is the ‘import’.
Let’s see how one of the best local winemakers we know stacks up against the classic stylings of the following varieties:
– Chardonnay
– Grüner Veltliner
– Syrah
– Zinfandel
