Winter Seminar Series: Chile
Saturday February 9, 2pm

Please note: Arroyo Vino Seminars are now at 2pm.

Chile’s wine industry has undergone a remarkable transformation in the past few years. After years of being subsumed underneath an ocean of innocuous corporate bottlings, Chile’s small, artesian producers are finally revealing themselves to the world at large. And it’s about time. Chile’s viticultural golden age was centuries past, when the rest of the wine world had been kneecapped by disease while this small, skinny South American country could supply almost limitless quantities of wine thanks to its isolation. A few families dominated the country’s wine industry, many of them still major players today. For the next hundred years complacency reigned supreme in the vineyards of Chile, but the return of democracy in the 1990s fueled major economic growth, propelling the Chilean wine industry into the modern world.

There is more quality wine being produced in Chile than ever before, from both the small, independently owned wineries challenging the status quo and the more established winemaking houses rising to the occasion. In our Saturday seminar we’ll explore classically styled examples of Carmenère and Syrah, and taste new, outlier bottlings of more obscure varieties such as Carignan, Cabernet Franc and País, a.k.a. Mission, the oldest variety planted in the country. So join us on Saturday for a deep dive into the wines of Chile.
