Fall Seminar Series: Spain Outside Rioja

November 3, 2018, 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

$10

For many people, Rioja is synonymous with Spanish wine, but Spain is a vast country that encompasses many different climates, winemaking styles and indigenous varieties. Taken in full it offers up a dizzying array of viticultural options, and quality has been steadily rising across the board, with a new generation of winemakers carving out a unique, modern identity for Spanish wine. There is huge variety to be found in Mediterranean Spain, the swath of countryside that runs from the French border down to Jerez. From the dark fruit driven power of Priorat to the old vine, vibrantly citrus tinged Garnachas of Alicante, and even the island of Majorca, we are enjoying quality wines. On the other side of the coin there are the coolly restrained, elegant wines of Atlantic Spain, to the north of Portugal and south of Bordeaux. Worth mentioning too are the powerful, boldly ripe wines of central Spain which have, alongside Rioja, defined the viticulture identity of Spain to the outside world for decades. Even the Sierra de Gredos Mountains, right outside of Madrid are producing some truly excellent juice. Join us Saturday when we taste through a selection of Spanish wines, both iconic classics and outliers off the beaten track, all outside the mainstream perception of what Spanish wine is meant to be.
