SUMMARY:Riesling Dinner w/ Dönnhoff & Selbach-Oster
DESCRIPTION:A “perfect” wine is not about dryness or sweetness\, about weight or concentration\, but rather about balance and the harmonious collaboration of a multitude of flavors and smells that draw you in and make you want to take another sip” – Johannes Selbach \nIt’s not often that one gets to be in the presence of wine royalty; even we of “The Wine World” can count the occurrences on a few fingers. So\, when two of German’s heavy hitters come to town it’s a BIG deal – even better: we get to do a wine dinner with them! Dönnhoff and Selbach-Oster are two of Germany’s most respected Riesling producers. We will have Johannes Selbach and Sascha Schömel\, Dönnhoff’s Export Manager\, in the house to talk about their iconic wines. \nGerman Riesling – though undeservedly maligned in the U.S. these days – was revered as some of the greatest wine in the world for centuries. Riesling is a perfect wine in many ways: it can be vinified in any way imaginable\, and it pairs with everything! Germany is at the extremes of wine making latitude with much of its vineyards outside of what is habitable to many wine grapes; however\, thanks to its rivers\, German vineyards enjoy hospitable microclimates. Pair this with slopes so steep vineyard workers need to be harnessed to the hillsides\, and one begins to comprehend the miracle that is German Riesling. Two of the modern masters of these intense terroirs are Dönnhoff\, from the Nahe\, and Selbach-Oster\, from the Mosel.\nThe Dönnhoff Family has been in the Nahe\, on the Rhine River\, for over 250 years; their winemaking story began with Hermann in the 1920s\, when he began bottling the Estate’s Rieslings. Hermann’s grandson Helmut is credited with bringing the estate into the top-tier of German producers. Cornelius\, the fourth generation Dönnhoff\, is now at the helm of the winery. He continues to follow the family motto: “[t]he vineyards speak for themselves. You have to listen to them.” According to famed wine professional Terry Theise\,\n“Dönnhoff wines hinge upon a paradox. Their essential nature is one of repose\, with a kind of crystalline serenity providing a calm backdrop for the most densely profound expression of sheer information\, so that one doesn’t fathom how a wine with so much to say can also seem so calm. To bring this about requires a virtuosity with texture\, and the wines are miracles of evanescence without ever being vague or indefinite. They walk the earth in a different gravity than you or I do”.\nThe Selbach family has a 400-year tenure in the Mosel. The family wine business began in the 1600s when they used their ships to transport wine in barrels made by the Oster family. Fast forward to 1964\, when the family separated its personal vineyards from its wine business. Johannes Selbach\, and now his son Sebastian\, farm the family’s impossibly steep\, slate riddled vineyards – many of which are own-rooted – organically farmed and produce some of the Mosel’s most sought-after wines. Bringing it back to Terry Thiese\,\n“Johannes Selbach himself is a conspicuous sort of gentleman… Johannes’ wines\, however\, are the opposite of conspicuous. Though far from modest or retiring\, they avoid all the gestures by which wines seek to attract attention… I wouldn’t describe Selbach’s wines as “introverted” but I would call them interior\, because they focus on texture and their north star is authenticity…” \n

The last time they were in town we focused on sherry and other oxidized wines\, this time around we will be selecting a line up of fruit liquors\, bitters – its spritz season – and  vermouths. This seminar will be a great way to learn about an array of mixing ingredients that elevate any cocktail and are also delicious on their own. \nSaturday\, June 20th; 1:00pm sharp\n$25 per person; credited back with purchases of $75 of products tasted \nReservations Required; Call to Reserve

SUMMARY:Wine Dinner w/ North Berkeley Imports
DESCRIPTION:North Berkeley Imports Wine Dinner\nJoin us for a fun and enlightening evening of French wine and food. We will be featuring wines from legendary producers\, to include Egly Ouriet in Champagne\, Remoisennet and Arlaud in Burgundy and Clos des Cailloux from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Along with this insane line-up\, Billy Weiss\, owner of North Berkeley Imports\, as well as his Regional Sales Manager\, Sien Brown\, will be here to talk about the wines. \nThe wine industry is full of “ah ha” moments; “moment[s]\, where a casual interest in wine turned into an all-consuming passion… [a] bottle with a character so profound it turned upside-down everything you thought you knew about the transformation of grape into wine.”\nBilly Weiss believes – and we agree – that a great importer is at the root of such moments. He\, and those that work for the company feel blessed to be the link between the growers and vignerons and the multitude of people who appreciate their hard work: “in substance\, we procure expressive\, authentic wines…in spirit\, we unite passions and palates…” Billy purchased North Berkley Wine Shop in 1999. North Berkeley was founded in 1979 just down the street from Alice Waters’ now iconic restaurant\, Chez Panisse. Billy transformed the beloved local shop into one of the most respected wine import companies in the country. Billy usually saves his travel to going to Europe to visit producers\, so having him in town for our wine dinner is a true honor. \nJune 3rd; 6:00pm\n195 per person + tax & gratuity\nreservations required; Call to Reserve

SUMMARY:Saturday Seminar: Native Italian Grapes w/ Master Sommelier Laura DePasquale
DESCRIPTION:Becoming a Master Sommelier takes years of study and dedication; one is in essence becoming a doctor of wine. Laura DePasquale has put in the hours\, days\, months\, and years of study to earn this prestigious and rare certification – there are currently less than 300 Master Somms in the world. Laura is putting her knowledge to work as a wine educator and fine wine portfolio manager for national wine distributor\, Southern Glazers. When we found out that she was coming to town we pounced at the chance to host her for a wine seminar. Since she travels the country doing wine education we figured it would be nice for her to choose her subject matter; when asked\, her response was immediate: “native Italian grapes\, always”. Conveniently for us\, this coincides nicely with our Italian obsession! Join us for this rare opportunity to get to learn from a Master. \n$25 per person; credited back with the purchase of $75\nReservations Required; 505.983.2

SUMMARY:COS Sicilian Wine Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Sicilian Wine Dinner featuring the iconic producer COS. We’ll have the National Representative in the building talking about the winery and the wines we will be tasting. \nFounded in 1980 by three friends – Giambattista Cilia\, Giusto Occhipinti\, and Cirino Strano; the winery is an acronym of their last names. The trio graduated high school and\, looking for a summer activity\, started making wine from historic\, family vineyards. One season and they were hooked. The vineyards and winemaking have been organically managed and low-intervention since the outset – a rarity at any time but particularly in that era of winemaking. COS paved the way for the future of Sicilian wine as well as the natural wine movement – as they put it\, they returned to the roots of winemaking to include the implementation of un-lined\, clay amphorae. COS remains one of the benchmark producers in Sicily if not the entirety of Italy. \nApril 30th\, 6:30pm\n$150 per person + tax & gratuity\nReservations Required; Reservations must be made by phone: 505.983.2100

SUMMARY:Family Meal: Polynesian Night
DESCRIPTION:This will be our final Family Meal of this season so we wanted to really up the fun level! \nWe go a bit gaga for retro dining experiences. This is particularly so for the booming Tiki culture of the 1940s and 50s. In case you’ve been living under a rock these past few years\, Tiki is back in a big way and we couldn’t be happier about it! While this renaissance places particular emphasis on cocktails\, the culinary side is also enjoying its time in the sun (again). The second we hear anything even close to Polynesian inspired our ears perk up\, our hearts go pitter-patter\, and our salivary glands go into overtime: who wouldn’t get excited about a heaping PuPu Platter and Pineapple Fried Rice? And of course we’ll have tasty tiki cocktails on offer in the requisite fun glassware.\nAloha attire strongly encouraged! \nThursday\, April 23rd\nSeatings at 5:00 & 7:30\nReservations Required; Reservations must be made by phone\n$59 per person ++

SUMMARY:Family Meal: Recipes From the Restaurant Prune
DESCRIPTION:This Family Meal is our thank you to a Chef and restaurant that inspired our love of food and the restaurant industry: Gabrielle Hamilton’s iconic Manhattan restaurant Prune. In addition to being one of the game-changing restaurants of the early aughts\, it also happens to be one of the restaurants that gave Chef Jessie the culinary spark: A friend gifted Jessie with Gabrielle’s memoir before the embarked on a backpacking trip around Europe; Jessie came back from the trip and wrote a letter to Gabrielle\, at Prune\, asking for a job. Needless to say\, this Family Meal is coming straight from Jessie’s heart! \nGabriel Hamilton opened her restaurant Prune\, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan\, in 1999. While to us\, today\, New York’s dining scene is at the forefront of culinary creativity\, “[a]t that point New York didn’t have an ambitious and exciting restaurant on every block\, in every unlikely neighborhood\, operating out of impossibly narrow spaces. There was no Eater\, no Instagram\, no hipster Brooklyn food scene. There was no serious restaurant that would allow a waiter to wear a flannel shirt…”. Prune brought French inspired bistro food\, using hyper local produce to a neighborhood served predominantly by European and middle eastern delis. Gabriel wanted to created a restaurant that served the type of food she cooked at home and for her friends; “a place you could go after work or on your day off if you had only a line cook’s paycheck but also a line cook’s palate.” To say that she accomplished her goal would be an understatement. Prune changed the face of Manhattan’s dining scene\, served as a precursor to the “hipster Brooklyn food scene”\, and firmly rooted the concept of elevated comfort food. Prune closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. \nThursday\, April 9th\nSeatings at 5:00 & 7:30\n$59 per person ++\nReservations Required; Reservations must be made by phone

SUMMARY:Saturday Seminar: Benchmark Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
DESCRIPTION:The undisputed king of American wine grapes and regions: Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley\, in California. The combination of this Bordeaux grape grown in the Napa terroir quite literally put American wine into the international wine world. The style of Napa Cab has fluctuated throughout its reign\, from restrained\, European-style at the outset\, to the heady\, uber ripe and heavily oaked styles of the 90’s and early oughts\, to the return of restraint in many of the current examples. \nThis seminar will focus on some of the most well regarded producers in the Valley – think Staglin\, Heitz\, Dunn\, et al. Our own Brian Bargsten will be leading this seminar – a man who whet his wine appetite with classic Napa Cabernets before beginning his slippery slope into the etherial world of Burgundy. \nSaturday\, March 21st\, 1:00pm Sharp\n$50 per person; credited back with purchases of $150 of wines tasted \nReservations Required; Call to Reserve 505.983.2100

SUMMARY:Family Meal: Recipes from Yotam Ottolenghi
DESCRIPTION:It’s unsurprising that we have a mild cookbook addiction. The best of them provide an education in both food and culture as well as delicious – and successful – recipes\, while the lesser of the category provide pretty pictures and glimpses of ideas; Yotam Ottolenghi’s cookbooks do both. They are beautiful\, at times tactile\, slices of culture filled with recipes that are failsafe. Based in London where he runs a string of Delis and restaurants with his business partner Sami Tamimi\, Ottolenghi is one of the preeminent faces (and palates) of modern Middle Eastern Cuisine. Born in Jerusalem of Italian and German heritage\, he has a broad cultural base from which his cuisine draws freely. He has won many awards for his restaurants and cookbooks\, including two James Beards; he is also a frequent food writer for the Guardian and has been featured on many BBC cooking programs. With ten cookbooks to choose from\, not to mention a website\, we had an overwhelming array of recipes and flavors to choose among… \nSeatings at 5:00 & 7:30\n$59 per person + tax & gratuity\nReservations Required; Reservations Must be Made by Phone\n505.983.2100

SUMMARY:Happy Hour Tasting w/ Au Bon Climat
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting a Happy Hour tasting with Knox Clendenen\, owner of the winery; he’ll be tasting us through Au Bon Climat’s core line-up\, discussing each cuvée as well as the winery’s illustrious history. Au Bon Climat was founded in Santa Barbara in 1982\, by Knox’s father Jim\, with the ethos of being totally devoted to making classic\, Burgundian-styled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County. The convergence of cool\, brisk Pacific air\, marine-based soils\, and east-west running valleys of the area provided an ideal place for growing exceptional grapes. Hence the name “Au Bon Climat\,” the French idiom for “good place”. In addition\, we will have the line-up available in the restaurant for those that would like to grab a snack and a glass of their favorite (our two) after the tasting. \nMarch 18th; 4:30 – 5:30pm\nFree – purchase of wine enthusiastically encouraged\nNo Reservations

SUMMARY:Saturday Seminar: Pinot Noir
DESCRIPTION:Arguably the world’s favorite grape\, Pinot Noir\, is grown and vinified in almost every wine growing region on the globe. With so many choices\, we could likely do a Pinot seminar a week and still have more to discuss and taste! This particular seminar will focus on the influence of terroir – that amorphous quality that encompasses a total picture of a grapes environment (and just a hint of jeu no se qua). The seminar will be conducted by our very own Brian Bargsten\, a man who has visited countless Pinot producers and sampled an even more unfathomable amount from all corners of the world. \n$25 per person; credited back with purchases of $75 of wine from the tasting\nSaturday February 14th; 1:00pm Sharp\nReservations Required; Call to Reserve
