SUMMARY:Riesling Dinner w/ Dönnhoff & Selbach-Oster
DESCRIPTION:A “perfect” wine is not about dryness or sweetness\, about weight or concentration\, but rather about balance and the harmonious collaboration of a multitude of flavors and smells that draw you in and make you want to take another sip” – Johannes Selbach \nIt’s not often that one gets to be in the presence of wine royalty; even we of “The Wine World” can count the occurrences on a few fingers. So\, when two of German’s heavy hitters come to town it’s a BIG deal – even better: we get to do a wine dinner with them! Dönnhoff and Selbach-Oster are two of Germany’s most respected Riesling producers. We will have Johannes Selbach and Sascha Schömel\, Dönnhoff’s Export Manager\, in the house to talk about their iconic wines. \nGerman Riesling – though undeservedly maligned in the U.S. these days – was revered as some of the greatest wine in the world for centuries. Riesling is a perfect wine in many ways: it can be vinified in any way imaginable\, and it pairs with everything! Germany is at the extremes of wine making latitude with much of its vineyards outside of what is habitable to many wine grapes; however\, thanks to its rivers\, German vineyards enjoy hospitable microclimates. Pair this with slopes so steep vineyard workers need to be harnessed to the hillsides\, and one begins to comprehend the miracle that is German Riesling. Two of the modern masters of these intense terroirs are Dönnhoff\, from the Nahe\, and Selbach-Oster\, from the Mosel.\nThe Dönnhoff Family has been in the Nahe\, on the Rhine River\, for over 250 years; their winemaking story began with Hermann in the 1920s\, when he began bottling the Estate’s Rieslings. Hermann’s grandson Helmut is credited with bringing the estate into the top-tier of German producers. Cornelius\, the fourth generation Dönnhoff\, is now at the helm of the winery. He continues to follow the family motto: “[t]he vineyards speak for themselves. You have to listen to them.” According to famed wine professional Terry Theise\,\n“Dönnhoff wines hinge upon a paradox. Their essential nature is one of repose\, with a kind of crystalline serenity providing a calm backdrop for the most densely profound expression of sheer information\, so that one doesn’t fathom how a wine with so much to say can also seem so calm. To bring this about requires a virtuosity with texture\, and the wines are miracles of evanescence without ever being vague or indefinite. They walk the earth in a different gravity than you or I do”.\nThe Selbach family has a 400-year tenure in the Mosel. The family wine business began in the 1600s when they used their ships to transport wine in barrels made by the Oster family. Fast forward to 1964\, when the family separated its personal vineyards from its wine business. Johannes Selbach\, and now his son Sebastian\, farm the family’s impossibly steep\, slate riddled vineyards – many of which are own-rooted – organically farmed and produce some of the Mosel’s most sought-after wines. Bringing it back to Terry Thiese\,\n“Johannes Selbach himself is a conspicuous sort of gentleman… Johannes’ wines\, however\, are the opposite of conspicuous. Though far from modest or retiring\, they avoid all the gestures by which wines seek to attract attention… I wouldn’t describe Selbach’s wines as “introverted” but I would call them interior\, because they focus on texture and their north star is authenticity…” \n

SUMMARY:Wine Dinner w/ North Berkeley Imports
DESCRIPTION:North Berkeley Imports Wine Dinner\nJoin us for a fun and enlightening evening of French wine and food. We will be featuring wines from legendary producers\, to include Egly Ouriet in Champagne\, Remoisennet and Arlaud in Burgundy and Clos des Cailloux from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Along with this insane line-up\, Billy Weiss\, owner of North Berkeley Imports\, as well as his Regional Sales Manager\, Sien Brown\, will be here to talk about the wines. \nThe wine industry is full of “ah ha” moments; “moment[s]\, where a casual interest in wine turned into an all-consuming passion… [a] bottle with a character so profound it turned upside-down everything you thought you knew about the transformation of grape into wine.”\nBilly Weiss believes – and we agree – that a great importer is at the root of such moments. He\, and those that work for the company feel blessed to be the link between the growers and vignerons and the multitude of people who appreciate their hard work: “in substance\, we procure expressive\, authentic wines…in spirit\, we unite passions and palates…” Billy purchased North Berkley Wine Shop in 1999. North Berkeley was founded in 1979 just down the street from Alice Waters’ now iconic restaurant\, Chez Panisse. Billy transformed the beloved local shop into one of the most respected wine import companies in the country. Billy usually saves his travel to going to Europe to visit producers\, so having him in town for our wine dinner is a true honor. \nJune 3rd; 6:00pm\n195 per person + tax & gratuity\nreservations required; Call to Reserve

SUMMARY:COS Sicilian Wine Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Sicilian Wine Dinner featuring the iconic producer COS. We’ll have the National Representative in the building talking about the winery and the wines we will be tasting. \nFounded in 1980 by three friends – Giambattista Cilia\, Giusto Occhipinti\, and Cirino Strano; the winery is an acronym of their last names. The trio graduated high school and\, looking for a summer activity\, started making wine from historic\, family vineyards. One season and they were hooked. The vineyards and winemaking have been organically managed and low-intervention since the outset – a rarity at any time but particularly in that era of winemaking. COS paved the way for the future of Sicilian wine as well as the natural wine movement – as they put it\, they returned to the roots of winemaking to include the implementation of un-lined\, clay amphorae. COS remains one of the benchmark producers in Sicily if not the entirety of Italy. \nApril 30th\, 6:30pm\n$150 per person + tax & gratuity\nReservations Required; Reservations must be made by phone: 505.983.2100

SUMMARY:Spottswoode Wine Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate wine dinner with Spottswoode Winery \nThe opportunity to host a dinner with Beth Weber Novak fell into our laps at the last minute\, and we jumped at it.\nDaughter of Spottwoode’s founder\, Mary Novak\, Beth has been an integral part in the estate since 1987; she is now its President and CEO.\nSpottswoode Winery was founded in 1982. The Estate is located in St. Helena\, in the Napa Valley\, at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. The Winery quickly established itself as a premier maker of Cabernet Sauvignon\, a distinction that has only strengthened with time. They converted their vineyards to organic farming in 1985 – one of the first in the Valley to do so – and have continued to be innovators in sustainability to this day. Spottswoode produces three wines: an estate Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the Lyndenhurst cuvée. We will be featuring all three for our wine dinner.\nBeth is a pleasure to be around and\, as a member of the family\, she has lived the Spottswoode ethos for more than four decades; what better way to get to learn about this historic estate. Plus\, you can be sure that Chef has created a delicious menu to pair with Spottwoode’s well crafted and elegant wines. \nTuesday\, November 19th at 6pm\n$175 per person + tax and gratuity\nReservations must be made by phone; 505.983.2100

SUMMARY:Benanti Wine Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Sicily is one of the places that is a dream-like Eden in our minds: none of the Arroyo Vino crew has been there\, yet we are all sure that it’s one of the best places on earth; Benanti is one of this Eden’s most iconic wine producers. As such\, we were oh so happy when Wilson Daniels Imports – the importer for these yummy wines –  asked us about hosting a Benanti wine dinner. William Davis\, the Director of Education for Willson Daniels\, will be in house to discuss the wines and the exceptional people who make them. We all love Italian wine and we all know that Chef Allison can cook a mean Italian meal\, so there should be no doubt that this will be an outstanding evening!

SUMMARY:Winery Dinner: Mayacamas Vineyards\, Mt. Veeder - Napa Valley
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, the wines of Mayacamas loom larger than life\, thanks to a rich and storied past. Founded in 1889\, the winery survived Prohibition\, triumphed at the Judgment of Paris\, and in subsequent tastings. Throughout its 129 years of operation\, Mayacamas has always been grounded on some of the most prime vineyard land in all of Napa Valley—namely\, the Mayacamas vineyard in Mt. Veeder. The well\, draining\, low-fertile soils of this mountain site experiences climactic conditions that are perfect for cultivating some of the most concentrated grapes in all of Napa. In the cellar\, Mayacamas’ winemaking style tends towards restraint and elegance rather than brawny fruit and high alcohol. No wonder the winery’s bottlings have gone toe to toe with some of the top wines of France and come out on top. Join us on November 19th for a wine dinner featuring guest speaker Cathy Cohn\, the national sales manager for Mayacamas. We’ll sample the current crop of bottlings available from this historic Napa Valley property\, providing you with an event rich in history and culture you won’t soon forget. \nThe special Prix Fixe menu will be available at any time and Cathy will be visiting tables throughout the night. SUMMARY:Winemaker Dinner: Marimar Torres from Marimar Estate
DESCRIPTION:The Torres family legacy stretches back centuries\, inexorably bound up with the history of enology in Spain and the expansion of viticulture to both North and South America. The is particularly exemplified through the work of fourth generation family member Marimar Torres\, director of Marimar Estate. Born in Barcelona during Franco’s dictatorship\, Marimar worked tirelessly to pursue both higher education and a place in the wine industry at a time when such things were incredibly difficult for women to attain. She founded her eponymous winery in 1986 after emigrating to the United States\, and it was here that she found renewed success as a vintner. The rolling green hills of the Russian River Valley\, cooled by the sea breezes and fog of the Pacific Ocean\, provided her with the perfect conditions for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the model of her family’s rigorous standards for quality fine wine. On November 6th we celebrate the wines of Marimar Estate with a very special dinner designed to highlight the elegance and balance of these unique wines\, which represent an ideal marriage between Catalonian and Californian viticulture. \nRECEPTION\nBlanc de Noirs Sonoma Coast Doña Margarita Vineyard\, 2017 \nFIRST\nStriped Bass Crudo\nwatercress\, burnt meyer lemon purée\, garlic chips\nAlbariño\, Russian River Valley Don Miguel Vineyard\, 2017 \nSECOND\nHouse Made Cavatelli\nwild mushrooms\, kale\, oregon hazelnuts\, pecorino\nChardonnay Russian River Valley ‘Acero’ Don Miguel Vineyard\, 2017\nChardonnay Russian River Valley Don Miguel Vineyard\, 1995\, en magnum \nTHIRD\nCrispy Duck Confit\nBrown butter turnip purée\, salsify\, leek fondue\, crispy leeks\nPinot Noir Russian River Valley ‘La Masia’ Don Miguel Vineyard\, 2015\nPinot Noir Sonoma Coast ‘Mas Cavalls’ Don Miguel Vineyard\, 2015 \nMignardises \n  \n$95 per person\, not including service and tax\nCall to make your reservation – 505.983.2100\nMust be 21 or older to attend.\nDue to the nature of the menu\, there can be no substitutions or modifications.\nMenu subject to change based on product availability \nWe recommend guests use transport alternatives (taxi\, Uber\, Lyft) when attending our events.\nIt eases parking problems and avoids any surprise encounters with local law enforcement. \n\n
